SHUCKSTACK  FIRE TOWER from TWENTYMILE RANGER STATION

Distance:   10.6 miles

Elevation Gain:   1500 feet

Rating:  Difficult

Driving time:  1.5 hours

Leader:   Thom Lewis  248-762-7053   [email protected]

Note a change from yearly schedule.  The Black Mountain hike scheduled for this date is changed to Friday, August 9, due to leader schedule conflicts.

Twentymile is one of the Smokies’ most remote areas.  You’ll travel along Twentymile Creek on an old railroad grade, past Twentymile Cascades, up to the Appalachian Trail and Shuckstack Mountain, and finally to a fire tower that offers one of those worth-the-effort, above the treetops, 360 degree panoramas.  While the first three miles of the trail from the ranger station is generally easy, there will be some strenuous climbing for the last two plus miles.

Note that this hike requires driving the Tail of the Dragon, US Hwy. 129, and some hikers have developed motion sickness on this road.

For This Hike:

Hiking boots and hiking sticks are recommended.
Driving directions will be provided the morning of the hike.
We will be car pooling. Please bring $6 to help defray costs for the drivers.
Bring water and a trail lunch.
