Muddy Boots - Indian Boundary Trail

Hike Description:  Head out on this 3.0 -mile loop trail near Tellico Plains, Tennessee.  Generally considered an easy route, walking around a small mountain lake.  It takes an average of 57 minutes to complete.  This is a popular trail for birding, hiking, and running, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day.  The lake has a nice beach for swimming, kayaking and paddle boards.  Bring your own water toys.  Flush toilets and picnic tables are available near the beach.

Meeting Location:  We will meet at 7:45 AM at 100 Chota Road across from the Marathon gas station.  There, we will give a quick rundown of the hike, restroom locations and provide driving directions.  There is a $3 per car parking fee for each car to be paid at the park.  Car pools will be worked out at this meeting.  Wheels rolling at 8 AM sharp.

Location/Distance/Drive Time:  Great Smoky Mountains near Townsend, 45 miles, 1 hour.

Directions:  

  • Take Tellico Parkway South and turn left onto Route 72 East for 5.9 miles
  • At Route 411 turn right (South) for 7.0 miles and take exit ramp for Route 68 South
  • Turn left onto Route 68 South and go 12.2 miles into Tellico Plains, Tennessee
  • Left onto Route 165 East (Cherohala Skyway)
  • After about 14 miles turn left onto Indian Boundary Lake Road (watch for signs for Indian Boundary Lake)
  • Go 1.1 miles and turn right at "T" intersection to beach and parking area

Be Prepared:  Hiking boots, water, snacks, bug spray and hiking poles recommended.  Hiking involves some exertion and often walking on uneven surfaces with rocks and roots.  While we do our best to describe any trail challenges and conditions, you are hiking at your own risk.  No pets are allowed on the hike. 

In the event of a situation requiring medical intervention during a hike, we suggest that each participant wear their Name Tag and bring a Photo ID (generally driver's license) and Medical Information cards (Health Insurance Card or Medicare + supplemental Health Insurance Cards).

Lunch:  On your own.  Bring a lunch or there are good restaurants in Townsend.
