BATTLE OF KNOXVILLE TOURFollow Union General Ambrose Burnside’s brilliant maneuvers as he falls back through Loudon and Campbell’s Station (now Farragut) delaying Confederate troops attempting to cut him off from Knoxville. Learn of the simultaneous herculean efforts by Federal engineering officer Orlando Poe to improve and construct 16 earth forts using a polyglot work force of Union soldiers, Confederate prisoners, civilians and slaves. Discover the strategic significance of Ft. Sanders…how it was named and the failed 20-minute battle to capture it. This narrated deluxe coach tour begins (9AM) and ends (5PM) at the Tellico Village Yacht Club parking lot. There will be stops at the Bleak House Mansion for a quick peek from the famous tower used by Confederate General Longstreet as he besieged and directed the offensive against Knoxville (Steep lengthy stairs to the tower.), at the McClung Museum to view the Battle of Ft. Sanders exhibits and movie, at the East Tennessee History Museum and at the restored Ft. Dickerson works. The coach will also drive by Lamar House (now the Bijou Theater), the 1860s Knoxville social and political hub and by the area where the now-obliterated Ft. Sanders was originally located. Admission to Bleak House ($7) and to the East Tennessee History Museum ($5) are not included in tour price. Lunch arrangements to be determined, but not included in tour price.
